What is the Matura?

The Matura is Austria's final secondary school leaving examination, also officially known as the "Reifeprüfung."

  • It marks the completion of secondary education, whether from a general secondary school (AHS) or a vocational secondary school (BHS).

  • Successfully passing the Matura grants students the "Maturazeugnis," a certificate.

  • This certificate provides unrestricted access to higher education in Austria, including universities and other tertiary institutions.

  • The exam typically includes written exams (usually German, Math, a foreign language), oral exams, and often a pre-academic paper (Fachbereichsarbeit).

  • It assesses a student's comprehensive knowledge and prepares them for further academic studies or professional life.
